Professor Hochschild utilizes an “applied engagement” approach to teaching so that students enjoy class while learning how sociology can be used to understand their own lives, and make positive social change. Some of these teaching methods include in-class and out-of-class games and activities, out-of-class experiential learning opportunities, service-learning in the community, and group research projects. Through fundraisers and donation drives, Professor Hochschild’s students have raised thousands of dollars to help fight poverty and homelessness in South Georgia.
His most recent peer-reviewed research publications pertain to:
- Gun violence in schools
- News media depictions of race, ethnicity, gender, and social class • Racial and ethnic bullying in schools
